Is it body image month?
BBC America is running a whole series of hour-long documentaries focusing on body issues. From small breasts to large ones to doing anything and everything to become super skinny to life as a 476 lbs girl to wishing you were a girl, BBC pretty much covers it.
People offering their individual perspective will say that beauty is in the eye of the beholder yet collectively, as a society, we’re constantly defining it. As a woman in her late twenties I’m coming to grips with the fact that the body changes. Maybe that’s why I’m instantly drawn to documentaries exploring this subject?
Well, I just watched Super Skinny Me, a story focusing on two journalists’ quest to drop from a UK size 12 to size OO (the size of a 6 year old girl) in five weeks time. The film follows these women as they try every crazy crash diet known to the Barnes & Noble diet section. It is a far from pretty journey. The emotional instability, the cravings, the mini-highs during weight-check in, and the very low-lows, I couldn’t turn away from the whole process. Fascinating yet at the same time, any women who has gone a diet, I’m sure will relate to the emotions.
If this subject is of interest, check it out on BBC. The following films are part of the series as well.
